We are often asked how Aikido and BJJ different from Karate or Tae Kwon Do. Both Aikido and BJJ are descendants from the samurai martial arts of Japan. As such, Aikido and BJJ are trained directly with a partner rather than focusing on forms, or kicking/punching air. Aikido and BJJ do not rely on punches and kicks at all but rather on effective grappling technique which allows a much smaller individual to successfully defend themselves from a larger person.

Aikido does incorporate striking within the technique, however it is not the emphasis of the technique or training. Aikido also incorporates the use of weapons such as the staff, knife, and Japanese sword (katana).

Welcome to Midwest Center for Movement!

The Midwest Center for Movement was founded in Hudson, WI in 2003 by Chief Instructor Michael Ellefson (learn more about him here!). We are proud to serve Hudson as well as the nearby areas in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Through the St. Croix Valley Grappling games, local organizations and local and national partnerships, we are honored to be able to contribute to multiple charitable organizations and causes within our community. We are proud to be a We Defy certified academy and to represent Mission 22 in the difficult and admirable work these organizations do.

Our Philosophy

As a school, our diverse knowledge base is strengthened by our ongoing commitment to learning, from the newest student to the head instructor. Visitors are always welcome- it doesn't matter your martial arts background (or lack thereof), or your affiliation- there is always something to learn on the mats!
